When educating a patient with respiratory alkalosis, be sure to cover the following topics and then evaluate your patient's understanding:

• explanation of the condition and its treatment
• warning signs and symptoms and when to report them
• anxiety-reducing techniques if appropriate
• controlled-breathing exercises if appropriate
• prescribed medications.
