Teaching Points

When teaching a patient with metabolic acidosis, be sure to cover the following topics and then evaluate your patient's understanding:

• basics of the condition and its treatment
• testing of blood glucose levels, if indicated
• need for strict adherence to antidiabetic therapy, if appropriate
• avoidance of alcohol
• warning signs and symptoms and when to report them
• prescribed medications
• avoidance of ingestion of toxic substances.
