Here's a quick look at how to interpret ABG results:
- Check the pH. Is it normal (7.35 to 7.45), acidotic (below 7.35), or alkalotic (above 7.45)?
- Check PaCO2. Is it normal (35 to 45 mm Hg), low, or high?
- Check the bicarbonate level. Is it normal (22 to 26 mEq/L), low, or high?
- Check for signs of compensation. Which value (PaCO2 or bicarbonate) more closely corresponds to the change in pH?
- Check PaO2 and SaO2. Is the PaO2 normal (80 to 100 mm Hg), low, or high? Is the SaO2 normal (95% to 100%), low, or high?
