Questions

C.1. How would you monitor this patient?

Answer:

Routine noninvasive monitoring would include ECG, blood pressure cuff, pulse oximetry, end-tidal carbon dioxide, esophageal stethoscope, temperature probe, and Foley catheter.

Invasive monitors include an arterial catheter and a central venous catheter. An arterial catheter is useful for serial blood sampling and continuous arterial blood pressure monitoring. There is a low threshold to place a central venous line to assist with resuscitation efforts. A pulmonary artery catheter is indicated if the patient has a history of heart failure, myocardial dysfunction, mixed shock picture, and/or poor response to resuscitation.
