Universal Precautions

Critical Element Criteria

Students must meet criteria of Critical Elements to safely perform the skill based on evidence-based practice. Score can be pass/fail, letter grade, or point assignment. Only acceptable score for Critical Elements is 100%

Critical Elements

  • Understanding of the importance of handwashing in the prevention of spreading health care associated infection (HCAI).
  • Understanding of the importance of when to wash hands.
  • Create appropriate physical environment.
  • Use of friction, running water and time during procedure.

Procedure

Prior to Treatment: (Critical Thinking)

  • Gather appropriate assessment equipment (running water, soap and clean paper towel).

Procedure: (Infection Control, Safety)

  1. Wet hands with water using comfortable temperature.
  2. Apply soap and wash all surfaces of hands and wrists vigorously for 20 seconds.
  3. Rinse hands under running water, allowing water to drip from fingers.
  4. Thoroughly dry hand and wrists with clean paper towel.
  5. Turn off faucet using a dry paper towel, protecting clean hands from contaminations.
