Treatment of external ocular infections

Solution

• Mild to moderate infections: Instill 1-2 gtts into the affected eye(s) q4 hrs
• Severe infections: Instill 2 gtts into the affected eye(s) q1 hr until improvement, then 1-2 gtts q4 hrs

Ointment

• Mild to moderate infections: Apply 0.5 inch ribbon into the affected(s) eye bid-tid
• Severe infections: Apply 0.5 inch ribbon into the affected eye(s) q3-4 hrs until improvement, then apply bid-tid

Pediatric Dosing

Children >2 months

• Solution
• Mild to moderate infections: Instill 1-2 gtts into the affected eye(s) q4 hrs
• Severe infections: Instill 2 gtts into the affected eye(s) q1 hr until improvement, then 1-2 gtts q4 hrs

• Renal impairment: No dose adjustments

Hepatic Dose Adjustment

• Hepatic impairment: No dose adjustments

• For ophthalmic use only, not for direct injection into the eye
• Sensitivity to topical application may occur; discontinue use
• Prolonged use can cause overgrowth of non susceptible organisms; institute alternative therapy if super infection occurs
• In cases of ocular infection, contact lenses should not be worn
• To prevent contamination of the solution, do not touch the tube tip to any surface, including the eye

Breastfeeding: Safety unknown. Minimal systemic absorption, maternal use of ophthalmic tobramycin is unlikely to affect the breastfed infant.
