a form of uveitis

Pathophys and Cause

Causes:of anterior and posterior uveitis (Nejm 1978;299:130) (uvea = choroid, iris, and ciliary body): idiopathic (1st), tbc, syphilis, histoplasmosis (often no bug in lesion), sarcoid, coccidioidomycosis, toxoplasmosis, rheumatoid arthritis esp in children or any inflammatory arthritis, anti-DNA and -RNA antibodies perhaps viral-related (Nejm 1971;285:1502), H. simplexand zoster, candida, hypermature cataract, trauma, intraocular tumor, Whipple's disease bacterium (Nejm 1995;332:363)

2% of remainder after FB

Signs and Symptoms

Sx/Si:Photophobia, eye ache, tenderness, tearing without exudate, visual blurring, turbid aqueous humor (wbc's and protein) or hypopyon, low pressure (5-10 mm Hg), miosis (constricted pupil), circumcorneal injection

Treatment

Rx: Steroids topically, mydriatics like Cyclogyl to prevent iris–lens synechiae
