• 1 mL (1440 EL.U.) IM injection, given in the deltoid region, followed by a booster dose of 1 mL (1440 EL.U.) administered 6-12 months later

Vaqta

• 1 mL (50 U) IM injection, given in the deltoid region, followed by a booster dose of 1 mL (50 U) administered 6-18 months later

• First dose of immunization should be administered at least 2 wks prior to expected exposure to HAV

• Therapy may cause severe allergic reactions in latex-sensitive individuals, because the vial stopper and syringes contain natural rubber latex and dry natural latex rubber, which may cause allergic reactions
• Following administration of the vaccine, adequate medical treatment and supervision must be available to manage possible immediate-type hypersensitivity reactions, such as anaphylaxis
• Use cautiously in immunocompromised persons including those receiving immunosuppressive therapy as they have diminished immune response to therapy and may not be protected against HAV infection after vaccination
• Because of the long incubation period for hepatitis A virus, vaccine may not prevent hepatitis A infection in individuals with unrecognized hepatitis A infection at the time of vaccination. Also, it does not prevent hepatitis caused by infectious agents other than hepatitis A virus

• Emphasize vaccine recipients and parents or guardians that the vaccine contains non-infectious killed viruses and cannot cause hepatitis A infection
• Advise vaccine recipients and parents or guardians to promptly report severe or unusual adverse events to their physician

Breastfeeding: As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and several health professional organizations, vaccines administered to a nursing mother do not affect the safety of breastfeeding for mothers or infants and breastfeeding is not a contraindication to the hepatitis A vaccine. Breastfed infants should be vaccinated as per the routine recommended schedules.
