Pathophys and Cause

Causes:Ambylopia = diminished visual cortical connections to an eye and consequent impaired visual acuity

Pathophys:Persistent strabismus, usually esotropia (inward deviation, onset w/i q1-2yr of birth)

Treatment

Rx: 1st, correct discrepant visual acuities, a common cause of strabismus; then patch for as little as 1-2 h/day, or atropine to other eye, even up to age 17 may restore visual function (Arch Ophthalmol 2005;123:437)
