Cause:Staph or strep superficial stratum granulosum (epidermal) infection

Signs and Symptoms

Si:Bullae, usually rupture

Complications

AGN

r/o ecthyma contagiosum or orf infection from sheep, where skin is invaded a little more deeply and requires longer conservative rx (Cleve Clin J Med 1991;58:531)

Lab and Xray

Lab:Culture to r/o MRSA

Treatment

Rx:Antistaph penicillin or topical mupirocin (Bactroban), or retapamulin (Altabax); wet compresses × 20 min bid
