Critical Elements

  • Supplies for sterile procedure should be single-use.
  • Maintain aseptic/sterile technique throughout.
  • Perform hand hygiene before and after procedure.
  • Sterile gloves should be maintained above waist when being worn.
  • Replace gloves that become torn.

  • Confirm if patient has latex allergy or sensitivity.
  • Gather equipment: Clean or sterile gloves; consider additional pair if contamination is a risk.

Steps of the Procedure (Infection Control)

  1. Obtain properly fitting clean gloves.
  2. Slide onto hands keeping as clean as possible.
  3. To remove, use dominant hand, grasping other glove near cuff end and remove it by inverting it keeping the contaminated area on the inside.
  4. Slide fingers of ungloved hand inside the remaining glove, grasp glove on the inside and remove by turning inside-out over hand and other glove.
  5. Discard soiled gloves in appropriate container.
  6. Wash hands.

Steps of the Procedure (Infection Control)

  1. Place sterile glove package on a clean, dry surface at or above the waist.
  2. Open the outside wrapper by pealing the top layer back, remove inner package and laying it on the table.
  3. Open the inner package using the flaps and exposing the sterile gloves with the cuff closest to you. Do not reach over the package.
  4. With the thumb and forefinger of non-dominate hand, grasp the folded cuff of the sterile glove for the dominant hand.
  5. Lift the glove up and off the inner package with fingers down. Do not touch any unsterile object.
  6. Insert dominant hand, palm up into glove and pull glove on.
  7. Hold thumb outward, sliding fingers of gloved hand under cuff of remaining glove and lift glove upward.
  8. Insert non-dominant hand into glove, adjusting both gloves and touching only sterile areas with other sterile areas.
  9. To remove, use dominant hand, grasping other glove near cuff end and remove it by inverting it keeping the contaminated area on the inside.
  10. Slide fingers of ungloved hand inside the remaining glove, grasp glove on the inside and remove by turning inside-out over hand and other glove.
  11. Discard soiled gloves in appropriate container.
  12. Wash hands.

After Procedure (Patient Centered Care, Safety)

  • Straighten room making patient comfortable, replace call light.
  • Wash hands before leaving room.
