• 1 gtt bid x 2 days, 8-12 hrs apart, then 1 gtt Daily for next 5 days

• Azithromycin ophthalmic, a macrolide antibiotic, is indicated for bacterial conjunctivitis, caused by susceptible isolates of the following microorganisms: CDC coryneform group G, Haemophilus influenzae, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mitis group, and Streptococcus pneumoniae

• Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of the product
• Contact lens use

• This formulation is indicated for topical ophthalmic use only
• Keep a space of 8-12 hrs for the initial bid doses
• Prolonged use may result in growth of resistant organisms
• In cases of bacterial conjunctivitis, contact lenses should not be worn
• Anaphylaxis and hypersensitivity have been reported with systemic use

Supplemental Patient Information

• Patients should be advised to avoid contaminating the applicator tip by allowing it to touch the eye, fingers or other sources
• Patients should be directed to discontinue use and contact a physician if any signs of an allergic reaction occur
• Advise patients not to wear contact lenses if they have signs/symptoms of bacterial conjunctivitis

Breastfeeding: Safety Unknown; however systemic absorption is minimal; so may have minimal excretion to breast milk. The drug would not be expected to cause any adverse effects in breastfed infants. Manufacturer advises caution.

• Macrolide antibiotic; binds to 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible microorganisms and interferes with microbial protein synthesis
• Topically applied and minimally absorbed
• Metabolized by liver; CYP450: Unknown
• Renally excreted: 6% unchanged; primarily in bile (> 50% unchanged)
• Half-life: 68 hrs
