[Outline]
- Administer cautiously to patients with a hx suggestive of insulinoma, pheochromocytoma, or both. In patients with insulinoma, IV administration may produce an initial increase in blood glucose. However, due to glucagons hyperglycemic effect the insulinoma may release insulin and cause subsequent hypoglycemia. Administer glucose orally or IV in such patients
- Seek emergency assistance and administer i.v.glucose if patient does does not respond within 15 min after SC or IM glucagon inj. Injection may be repeated while waiting for assistance. Give Oral Carbohydrate when the patient has responded to the treatment
- Glucagon is effective in treating hypoglycemia only if sufficient liver glycogen is present. It may not be beneficial in states of starvation, adrenal insufficiency, or chronic hypoglycemia
- Monitor blood sugars frequently in hypoglycemic patient until the patient is asymptomatic
- Monitor BP and pulse after administering glucagon. Be prepared to administer phentolamine to reduce BP in patient with pheochromocytoma or with coronary artery disease
