Iron deficiency anemia

Treatment

• 2–3 mg/kg/day PO divided bid-qid or 60–100 mg PO elemental iron bid

Prophylaxis

• 60–100 mg/day PO elemental iron

Pediatric Dosing

Iron deficiency anemia

Infants and Children

• Treatment:
• Severe deficiency: 4–6 mg/kg/day PO divided tid
• Mild to moderate deficiency: 3 mg/kg/day PO divided qd-bid

• Prophylaxis:
• 1–2 mg/kg/day PO in divided qd-bid. Max: 15 mg/day

Neonates or premature infants

• 2–4 mg/kg/day PO divided qd-bid. Max: 15 mg/day

• Take dosage as recommended. Do not exceed recommended dosage

• Do not administer therapy within two hours of an antibiotic use since oral iron products interfere with absorption of certain antibiotics
• Administer with food to avoid gastrointestinal discomfort (such as nausea)
• Therapy may cause constipation or diarrhea

• Severe hepatic impairment
• Severe renal impairment
• Peptic ulcer disease
• Ulcerative colitis or regional enteritis

• GI: Dyspepsia , nausea, constipation, dark stools, epigastric pain, GI bleeding, vomiting, diarrhea
• MISC: Temporary staining of teeth

• 60% absorbed via active and passive transport processes

• Minimally excreted in sweat, urine, bile
