Signs and Symptoms

Sx:Fall on outstretched hand

Si:Tender snuff box w thumb extended; pain w axial compression and w resisted wrist pronation

Complications

Avascular necrosis

Lab and Xray

Xray:Fracture, distal, waist or proximal types

Treatment

Rx:

if no fx but painful, thumb spica × 2 wk, then re-xray; if still neg but still sx and suspicious, then CT or bone scan

Surgery for waist or proximal types

Thumb spica × 6-8 wk for distal types
