- At least 3 months should elapse between a dose of varicella-containing vaccine and a dose of M-M-R-V live vaccine
- Use only sterile syringes that are free of preservatives, antiseptics, detergents, and other anti-viral substances for reconstitution and injection of the vaccine
- Administer the vaccine immediately after reconstitution to minimize loss of potency

See Supplemental Patient Information
- Measles, mumps, rubella and varicella virus vaccine is associated with higher rates of fever and febrile seizures at 5-12 days after vaccination in children 12-23 months old who have not been previously vaccinated against measles, mumps, rubella, or varicella, nor had a history of the wild-type infections when compared to children vaccinated with dose 1 of both M-M-R II and Varivax administered separately
- Administer cautiously in children with a history of cerebral injury, seizures or any other condition in which stress due to fever should be avoided. Healthcare providers must be alert to the temperature elevations that may occur following vaccination
- Caution should be exercised when administering M-M-R-V live vaccine to children with egg allergy or contact hypersensitivity to neomycin
- Cautiously evaluate the potential risk-to-benefit ratio before considering vaccination in children with thrombocytopenia or in those who developed thrombocytopenia after vaccination with a previous dose of M-M-R-V live vaccine
- As transmission of varicella vaccine virus may occur between healthy vaccine recipients and contacts susceptible to varicella, close contact with high-risk individuals susceptible to varicella should be avoided
- Pregnancy should be avoided for 3 months following vaccination with measles, mumps, rubella, and/or varicella vaccines
- Safety and efficacy of M-M-R-V live vaccine for use after exposure to measles, mumps, rubella, or varicella have not been established
- Safety and efficacy of M-M-R-V live vaccine for use in children known to be infected with human immunodeficiency viruses have not been established
- Defer vaccination for at least 3 months following blood or plasma transfusions, or administration of immune globulins (IG)
- Do not use salicylates for 6 weeks after vaccination with M-M-R-V live vaccine
Supplemental Patient Information
- Inform patients, parents, or guardians that the vaccination may not offer 100% protection from measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella infection
Pregnancy Category:C
Breastfeeding: According to the CDC and other health organizations, M-M-R-V live vaccine given to a nursing mother does not affect the safety of breastfeeding for mothers or breastfed infants. Breastfeeding is not a contraindication to measles, mumps, rubella and varicella virus vaccine. Breastfed infants should be vaccinated according to the routine recommended schedules. Although rubella vaccine virus might be excreted into milk, the virus usually does not infect the infant. This information is based upon LactMed database (available at http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/htmlgen?LACT last accessed 27 July 2011). Manufacturer advises caution while administering to a nursing woman.
