Adult Dosing

Genitourinary Tract Infection

Mild/Moderate Infection

• 500 mg PO qid; continue therapy x 3 days after symptoms improve
• Note: Severe/chronic infections may require larger doses

Lower Respiratory Tract Infection

• 250 mg PO qid

Gonorrhea Acute, uncomplicated ano-genital and urethral infections

• 3.5 g PO with 1 g probenecid once

• Treatment of infections caused by susceptible strains as listed below
• Genitourinary Tract Including Gonorrhea - Caused by E. coli, P. mirabilis, enterococci, Shigella, S. typhosa and other Salmonella, and nonpenicillinase-producing N. gononhoeae
• Respiratory Tract Infections - Caused by nonpenicillinase-producing H. influenzae and staphylococci, and streptococci including streptococcus pneumoniae
• Gastrointestinal Tract - Caused by Shigella, S. typhosa and other Salmonella, E. coli, P. mirabilis, and enterococci

• History of previous hypersensitivity reaction to any of the penicillins
• Infections caused by penicillinase-producing organisms

Renal Dose Adjustment (Base on CrCl)

• 10-50 (mL/min): Give q6-12 hrs
• <10 (mL/min) Give q12-24 hrs

• Serious and occasionally fatal hypersensitivity (anaphylactic) reactions have been reported in patients on penicillin therapy more likely to be occur in individuals with a history of penicillin hypersensitivity and/or a history of sensitivity to multiple allergens
• Discontinue drug if allergic reaction occurs and institute appropriate therapy
• Treatment with epinephrine and other emergency measures required in serious acute anaphylactoid reactions
• Periodic assessment of organ system function, including renal, hepatic, and hematopoietic, should be made during prolonged therapy

Cautions: Use cautiously in

• Penicillin-sensitive patients
• Cephalosporin-sensitive patients

Supplemental Patient Information

• Advise diabetic patients to consult prior changing diet or dosage of diabetes medication
• Advise patients to tale ampicillin with a full glass (8 oz) of water, one-half hr before/two hrs after meals

Breastfeeding: Excreted in trace amounts in human milk. Hence, caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.

• GI: Glositis, stamatitis, nausea, vomiting, enterocolitis, pseudomembranous colitis, diarrhea
• HYPERSENSITIVITY: Erythematous, mildly pruritic, maculopapular skin rash, skin rash, pruritus, urticaria, erythema multiforme, exfoliative dermatitis
• LABTESTS: Moderate elevation in serum glutamic oxalaacetic transaminase (SGOT)
• HEMA: Anemia, thrombocytopenia, thrombocytopenic purpura, eosinophilia, leukapenia, agranulacytosis
• MISC: Laryngeal stride, high fever, sore mouth/tongue

• Anti-infective; destroys bacteria by inhibiting bacterial cell-wall synthesis during microbial multiplication
• Metabolized by the liver 10%
• Excreted largely unchanged in urine
