Adult Dosing
Genitourinary Tract Infection
Mild/Moderate Infection
- 500 mg PO qid; continue therapy x 3 days after symptoms improve
- Note: Severe/chronic infections may require larger doses
Lower Respiratory Tract Infection
Gonorrhea Acute, uncomplicated ano-genital and urethral infections
- 3.5 g PO with 1 g probenecid once

- <20 kg: 50-100 mg/kg/day in 3-4 divided doses

- Serious and occasionally fatal hypersensitivity (anaphylactic) reactions have been reported in patients on penicillin therapy more likely to be occur in individuals with a history of penicillin hypersensitivity and/or a history of sensitivity to multiple allergens
- Discontinue drug if allergic reaction occurs and institute appropriate therapy
- Treatment with epinephrine and other emergency measures required in serious acute anaphylactoid reactions
- Periodic assessment of organ system function, including renal, hepatic, and hematopoietic, should be made during prolonged therapy

Supplemental Patient Information
- Advise diabetic patients to consult prior changing diet or dosage of diabetes medication
- Advise patients to tale ampicillin with a full glass (8 oz) of water, one-half hr before/two hrs after meals
