Major Diagnostic Criteria
☐Plasmacytoma on tissue biopsy
☐Bone marrow plasmacytosis of >30%
☐M Protein (IgG>3.5 g/L; IgA>2.0 g/L)
☐Urinary kappa or lambda chain excretion of >1g/24 hours (Amyloidosis must be absent)
Minor Diagnostic Criteria
☐Marrow plasmacytosis of 10-30%
☐Lytic bone lesions
☐Monoclonal protein present (But in lesser amounts than required in major criteria)
☐Hypoglobulinemia of normal proteins (IgM<500 mg/L, IgA<1 g/L or IgG<6 g/L)

Multiple Myeloma Criteria

Multiple myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells and is a progressive hematologic disease that currently has no cure, but is treatable.Incidence is 5-6/100,000/year with a male and African American predominance.Age is a major risk factor, with just 1% of cases occurring under age 40 years and the average age at diagnosis being 68 years.

The diagnostic criteria of Durie and Salmon require either:

  • 1 Major Criteria and 1 Minor Criteria
  • 0 Major Criteria and 3 Minor Criteria

Major Diagnostic Criteria

  • Plasmacytoma on tissue biopsy
  • Bone marrow plasmacytosis of >30%
  • M Protein (IgG>3.5 g/L; IgA>2.0 g/L)
