- Epistaxis, nasal ulcerations, erosions have been reported in patients treated with beclomethasone. Examine periodically for changes in the nasal mucosa if beclomethasone is used for several months or longer
- Discontinue the therapy if hypersensitivity reactions including anaphylaxis, angioedema, urticaria, and rash occur
- Replacement of a systemic corticosteroid with beclomethasone nasal spray can be accompanied by signs of adrenal insufficiency
- When shifting from systemic corticosteroid used for prolonged period to beclomethasone nasal spray, closely monitor the patients, especially those who are suffering from asthma or other clinical conditions where too rapid decrease in systemic corticosteroids may cause a severe exacerbation of their symptoms
- Symptoms of hypercorticism including menstrual irregularities, acneiform lesions, cataracts, and cushingoid features have been reported if recommended doses of intranasal beclomethasone are exceeded or if individuals are particularly sensitive or predisposed by virtue of recent systemic steroid therapy. Discontinue the drug slowly if such changes occur
- Use of corticosteroid can suppress the immune system and thus increase the susceptibility to infections like chickenpox and measles, hence particular care should be taken to avoid exposure in these patients
- If exposed to chickenpox, give prophylaxis with varicella zoster immune globulin (VZIG). If exposed to measles, give prophylaxis with pooled intramuscular immunoglobulin (IG) and consider antiviral treatment if chickenpox develops
- Reduction in growth velocity has been reported with intranasal corticosteroids when used in pediatric patients
- Intranasal use of beclomethasone can cause wheezing, cataracts, glaucoma, and increased intraocular pressure
- Rare instances of nasal septum perforation have been following intranasal use of beclomethasone
- Localized infections of the nose and pharynx with candida albicans can occur with intranasal administration of beclomethasone. Discontinue the treatment and provide appropriate local therapy
- Stop beclomethasone nasal spray, if persistant nasopharyngeal irritation occurs
- Excessive dose of beclomethasone nasal spray suppress HPA function
- Use cautiously in all the patients with active or quiescent tuberculous infections of the respiratory tract, untreated local or systemic fungal or bacterial infections, systemic viral or parasitic infections, or ocular herpes simplex
- Examine the nasal mucosa for the possible changes periodically, when beclomethasone is used over several months or longer
- Do not use in patients with recent nasal septal ulcers, nasal surgery, or nasal trauma until the healing has occurred, as corticosteroids inhibits the wound healing
Cautions: Use cautiously in
- Asthma
- Exposure to measles or chickenpox
- Pediatric patients
- Increased intraocular pressure
- Active or quiescent tuberculous
- Untreated local or systemic fungal or bacterial infection
- Systemic viral or parasitic infections
- Ocular herpes simplex
- Cataracts
- Glaucoma
Supplemental Patient Information
- If clinical condition worsen or no improvement of symptoms in such case patient should contact to physician
- Instruct patient to avoid exposure to chickenpox or measles
Pregnancy Category:C
Breastfeeding: The amounts of inhaled corticosteroids absorbed and excreted in breast milk are too small to affect a breastfed infant. This information is based upon LactMed database (available at http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/htmlgen?LACT last accessed 19 April 2011). As per manufacturer data, because of the potential for possible serious adverse reactions in nursing infants a decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.
