Adult Dosing
Active duodenal ulcer
- Carafate and sucralfate generic tablet
- 1 g PO qid on an empty stomach
- Continue treatment for 4-8 weeks
- Carafate suspension
- 1 g PO (10 mL/2 teaspoonfuls) qid on an empty stomach
Note:
- Antacids is prescribed for relief of pain but should not be taken within one-half hour before or after sucralfate
Maintenance therapy (duodenal ulcer)
- Carafate and sucralfate generic tablet
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients have not been established

- Chronic renal failure
- Elderly patients
- Diabetic patients
- Dysphagia
- Impaired gag reflex
- Hx of aspiration risk with tablets

Breastfeeding: Safety unknown;no data are available on sucralfate use during breastfeeding; however, it is virtually unabsorbed orally. Most authorities consider sucralfate acceptable to use during breastfeeding. No special precautions are required.
