Pathophys and Cause

Cause:Neoplasia, genetic in 10%

Pathophys:Neoplastic transformation of adult cartilage cells, often from enchondromas or osteochondromas, esp in genetic type; most commonly arises from metaphysis side of epiphyseal plate area; ribs often involved; may calcify

Older patients

Signs and Symptoms

Sx:Pain after trauma

Course

Very benign even with metastases since such a slow grower. Easily live years even without rx

Complications

Local and pulmonary mets; surgical excision may start metastatic implants

Lab and Xray

Lab:

Path:Large chondrocytes, multinucleate, little cytoplasm; less intercellular matrix than normal or than a benign tumor

Xray: Flecks of calcification next to joints

Treatment

Rx:Surgical excision. Little reponse to radiation
