Adult Dosing
Corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses
- Apply a thin film of 0.1% cream/ointment to the affected areas qd; alt: apply a few drops of 0.1% lotion to the affected skin areas qd until it disappears
Notes:- Discontinue therapy once control is achieved
- Consider reassessment of diagnosis if no improvement occurs within 2 wks of therapy
- Do not use with occlusive dressings unless indicated
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and effectiveness of cream and ointment in pediatric patients <2 yrs of age have not been established
- Safety and effectiveness of mometasone lotion in pediatric patients <12 yrs of age have not been established

- >2 yrs: Apply a thin film of 0.1% cream/ointment to the affected areas qd [Max: 3 wks]
- >12 yrs: Apply a few drops of 0.1% lotion qd to the affected areas and massage lightly until it disappears [Max: 3 wks]

- Reversible hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis suppression, Cushing's syndrome, hyperglycemia, and glucosuria may occur due to systemic absorption of topical corticosteroids
- Prolonged use on large surface areas or application of large amounts or use of occlusive dressings may increase systemic absorption
- Patients applying the drug to a large surface area or to areas under occlusive dressing should be evaluated periodically for evidence of HPA axis suppression by performing tests such as, urinary free cortisol, A.M plasma cortisol, and the ACTH stimulation. If HPA axis suppression is noted, withdrawal of the drug or reducing the frequency of application or substitution with a steroid of lesser potency should be considered
- Signs and symptoms of steroid glucocorticosteroid insufficiency may occur; provide supplemental systemic corticosteroids in such cases
- Pediatric patients may be more susceptible to systemic toxicity from equivalent doses
- In case of irritation, discontinue topical corticosteroids and institute appropriate therapy
- Appropriate antifungal or antibacterial agent should be used in case of concomitant dermatological infections. If a prompt favorable response is not obtained, discontinue corticosteroid use until the infection has been adequately controlled
Supplemental Patient Information
- Advise patients to use this medication as directed by the physician and to strictly adhere to dosage instructions
- Advise patients to consult their physician in the event of any adverse reactions
- Advise parents of pediatric patients not to use this medication for diaper dermatitis; should not be applied in the diaper area as diapers or plastic pants may act as occlusive dressing
Pregnancy Category:C
Breastfeeding: Short-term application of topical corticosteroids is not expected to pose a risk to the breastfed infant by passage into breastmilk. Use of the least potent drug on the smallest area of the mother's skin is recommended. Ensure that the infant's skin does not come into direct contact with the areas treated with this drug. Use of lower potency corticosteroids on the nipple or areola is recommended. Water-miscible cream or gels should be used for application on the breasts. Any topical corticosteroid should be wiped off thoroughly prior to nursing if it is applied to the nipple or areola.
