Epidemiology

Peak incidence age 1-5 yr; assoc w now discontinued rotavirus vaccine, which may hypertrophy Peyer’s patches, which then act as sleeving mass (Peds 1999;104:575)

Signs and Symptoms

Sx:Crampy pain and strikingly normal between cramps, though can eventually develop stupor (Peds 1980;65:A1057); bloody “currant jelly” stool

Si:Normal exam between cramps, but often lethargic

Complications

R/o Meckel’s diverticulum in <1% of people, usually ulcerates in childhood

Treatment

Rx: Air reduction under fluoroscopy or ultrasound
