Adult Dosing
Corneal ulcers
Ophthalmic solution
- Day 1: Instill 2 gtts in affected eye(s) q15 min x 6 hrs, then q30 min x 18 hrs
- Day 2: Instill 2 gtts in affected eye(s) q1 hr
- Days 3 through 14: Instill 2 gtts in affected eye(s) q4 hrs
- Note: May need to extend course if corneal re-epithelialization has not occurred
Bacterial conjunctivitis
Ophthalmic solution
- Days 1 & 2: Instill 1-2 gtts in affected eye(s) q2 hrs while awake
- Days 3 through 7: Instill 1-2 gtts in affected eye(s) q4 hrs for 5 days
Ophthalmic ointment
- Days 1 & 2: Apply 0.5 inch ribbon in conjunctival sac affected eye(s) tid
- Days 3 through 7: Apply 0.5 inch in affected eye(s) bid

- Ophthalmic solution should not be injected subconjunctivally, nor should it be introduced directly into the anterior chamber of the eye
- Serious and occasionally fatal hypersensitivity (anaphylactic) reactions have occurred with systemic quinolone therapy, even following a single dose
- Prolonged administration may cause bacterial superinfection
- Discontinue use immediately at the first sign of rash or allergic reaction
- May retard corneal healing and cause visual blurring
- Avoid contaminating the applicator tip with material from the eye, fingers or other source
- Advise patients to avoid using contact lenses during treatment period
Supplemental Patient Information
- Instruct patient on proper instillation technique and to remove contact lenses

Breastfeeding: Maternal use of ophthalmic ciprofloxacin presents negligible risk for the nursing infant.
