Why a 12-Lead ECG?

A 12-lead ECG is performed on patients having a myocardial infarction (MI). It may also be ordered for patients with other conditions that affect the heart, including:

  • angina
  • arrhythmias
  • heart chamber enlargement
  • digoxin or other drug toxicity
  • electrolyte imbalances
  • pulmonary embolism
  • pericarditis
  • hypothermia
