Introduction

Posttest care should be consistent and should provide clearly understood discharge instructions. Emphasize the importance of and protocols for additional visits if these are ordered. Schedule ordered follow-up visits as appropriate. Use established protocols for discharge to home after testing is completed. For complex procedures that are invasive or require sedation, be certain that a responsible individual escorts the patient home. Provide specific instructions regarding infection control, barium elimination, iodine sensitivity, and resuming pretest activities. Have the patient repeat this information back to the person providing the information to ensure that it has been understood. Plan time for listening, support, discussion, and problem-solving according to the patient’s needs and requests. Follow-up by phone may be done after discharge if indicated.
