Recovered medical errors can be defined as errors prevented through surveillance. In essence, a nurse or other paramedical personnel has identified, interrupted, and corrected a potential error, preventing an adverse reaction. Recovered medical errors can be divided into two major categories: (1) mistakes (e.g., laboratory findings used incorrectly, protocol not being followed in a technical procedure) and (2) poor judgment (e.g., a delay in a diagnostic test, unstable clinical signs/conditions not recognized). Being cognizant of the aforementioned errors can protect patients from harm.
