Identify, obtain consent, and test source of exposure immediately for evidence of HIV, HBV, and HCV. If the patient refuses consent, a nonconsenting form must be signed. If nonconsenting testing is done on the source, the exposed staff member must also have testing.
Advise the HIV-negative worker to seek medical evaluation of any acute febrile illness that occurs within 12 weeks after exposure to HIV and be retested 6 weeks, 12 weeks, and 6 months after exposure.
Vaccine is available at no cost to healthcare workers to prevent HBV infection. There is no vaccine for HIV or HCV.
