Focused Assessment of the Patient with Pleural Effusion
History- Dyspnoea
- Pleuritic chest pain, chest discomfort or 'heaviness', pain referred to the shoulder or abdomen
- Dry cough
- Symptoms of malignancy: loss of appetite, energy, weight
- Symptoms of infection: fever, sputum, night sweats
- May also be asymptomatic
Examination - Reduced chest expansion
- Reduced tactile vocal fremitus
- Dull percussion
- Reduced breath sounds
- Pleural friction rub may be heard in patient with pleural inflammation
