Focused Assessment of the Patient with Pleural Effusion

History
  • Dyspnoea
  • Pleuritic chest pain, chest discomfort or 'heaviness', pain referred to the shoulder or abdomen
  • Dry cough
  • Symptoms of malignancy: loss of appetite, energy, weight
  • Symptoms of infection: fever, sputum, night sweats
  • May also be asymptomatic

Examination

  • Reduced chest expansion
  • Reduced tactile vocal fremitus
  • Dull percussion
  • Reduced breath sounds
  • Pleural friction rub may be heard in patient with pleural inflammation
