Investigation in Hypercalcaemia

  • Full blood count
  • Plasma sodium, potassium, urea and creatinine with eGFR
  • Uncuffed sample for plasma calcium, phosphate, magnesium, total protein, albumin, alkaline phosphatase
  • Chest X-ray
  • ECG

If the cause of hypercalcaemia is not known:

  • Serum and urine protein electrophoresis
  • Parathyroid hormone (PTH)
  • Parathyroid hormone related protein (PTH related hormone is very rarely required and is offered by few laboratories)
  • C-reactive protein and ESR
  • Thyroid function tests
  • Vitamin D (25-hydroxy vitamin D)
  • Urine calcium concentration
