Potassium Replacement in Diabetic Ketoacidosis*
* Check plasma potassium on admission, 60 min, 120 min, and then 2-hourly from then on.
Can increase the rate of the overall fluid infusion if fluid balance permits, infusion rates of up to 20 mmol/h of potassium can be given peripherally. If there is persistent hypokalaemia, rates of up to 40 mmol/h can be given via a central venous catheter, with monitoring in a high dependency unit.
