See Supplemental Patient Information
- Reversible hypothalamicpituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis suppression, manifestations of Cushings syndrome, hyperglycemia, and glucosuria have been reported in some patients with systemic absorption of topical corticosteroids
- Evaluate patients receiving a large dose of a potent topical steroid, applied to a large surface area or under an occlusive dressing periodically for evidence of HPA axis suppression, as these conditions augment the systemic absorption. Withdraw the drug or reduce the frequency of application, or substitute a less potent steroid , if HPA axis suppression is noted
- On discontinuation of corticosteroids there is prompt and complete recovery of HPA axis function. Signs and symptoms of steroid withdrawal can occur, requiring supplemental systemic corticosteroids
- Pediatric patients are more susceptible to systemic toxicity, as proportionally larger amounts of topical corticosteroids is absorbed
- Discontinue application and institute appropriate therapy if irritation develops
- Appropriate antifungal or antibacterial agent should be instituted in the presence of dermatological infections. If a favorable response does not occur promptly, discontinue the corticosteroid until the infection has been adequately controlled
Cautions: Use cautiously in
- Skin infections
- Pediatric patients
Supplemental Patient Information
- Discontinue the treatment when control is achieved, if no response is seen within 14 days contact to physician
- Any worsening of skin, promptly contact to physician
Pregnancy Category:C
Breastfeeding: No studies conducted during breastfeeding; short-term application of topical corticosteroids (fluocinolone) is not expected to pose a risk to the breastfed infant by passage into breastmilk. Use of the least potent drug on the smallest area of skin of mother is recommended. Ensure that the infant's skin does not come into direct contact with the areas treated with this drug. Use of lower potency corticosteroids, water-miscible cream products on the nipple or areola is recommended. Any topical corticosteroid should be wiped off thoroughly prior to nursing if it is applied to the nipple or areola.
