Prophylaxis against tetanus
Treatment of Tetanus
- Adjust dose according to the severity of the infection; Alt: 3000-6000 U IM x 1
- Administer immediately after diagnosis
Pediatric Dosing
Prophylaxis against tetanus
- Children >7 yrs: 250 U IM x 1
- Children <7 yrs: 4 U/kg IM x 1; Alt: 250 U IM x 1

- Tetanus immune globulin is prepared from human plasma; hence there is a chance of transmission of viral infections including viral hepatitis and theoretically, the Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) agent. However because of plasma donor screening and viral inactivation and removal properties, the incidence of viral transmission is low
- Discuss the potential risks and benefits of this product with the patient, before prescribing or administering it to the patient
- Tetanus immune globulin can cause systemic allergic reactions, use cautiously in with patients history of prior systemic allergic reactions
- Tetanus immune globulin is only for intramuscular administration, do not give intravenously, as it can cause precipitous fall in blood pressure. Care should be taken to draw back on the plunger of the syringe before injection in order to be certain that the needle is not in a blood vessel
- Due to IM route of administration, use with caution in patients with thrombocytopenia or coagulation disorders

- History of hypersensitivity to human immunoglobulin preparations
- Bleeding disorders
