• Patients with asthma have reported severe respiratory reactions and cardiac reactions including death due to bronchospasm with the use of topical application of beta-adrenergic blocking agents. Discontinue the therapy at the first signs of cardiac failure
• Do not touch dropper tip to any surface as this may contaminate the solution
• Therapy may mask the signs and symptoms of acute hypoglycemia
• Patients suspected of developing thyrotoxicosis should be carefully managed to avoid abrupt withdrawal of therapy to prevent precipitation of a thyroid storm
• Patients using betaxolol have reported severe muscle weakness consistent with certain myasthenic symptoms like diplopia, ptosis, and generalized weakness
• Consider gradual withdrawal of beta-adrenergic blocking agents prior to general anesthesia
• Asthmatic attacks and pulmonary distress may occur during betaxolol therapy
• Patients with a history of atopy or a history of severe anaphylactic reaction to a variety of allergens and using beta-blockers may be more reactive to repeated accidental, diagnostic, or therapeutic challenge with such allergens and may not respond to the usual doses of epinephrine

Breastfeeding: Because of its relatively extensive excretion into breastmilk and minimal reported experience during breastfeeding, other beta-blocking agents may be preferred for systemic use, especially while nursing a newborn or preterm infant. With betaxolol eye drops, it is not likely that sufficient amounts would be present in milk to affect the infant. To reduce the amount of drug that reaches breastmilk, place pressure over the tear duct by the corner of the eye for 1 minute or more and remove the excess with an absorbent tissue; based upon LactMed database (available at http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/htmlgen?LACT last accessed 15 March 2011).
