Adult Dosing

Osteoarthritic knee pain

• Inject 2 mL intra-articularly into the knee joint in a series of injections 1 wk apart for 3-4 injections
• Repeat course, if symptoms return

• Inject aseptically using 18-21 gauge needle
• If treatment is bilateral, use a separate syringe for each knee
• Remove any synovial fluid or joint effusion prior to each injection

• Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of the product
• Hypersensitivity to avian or avian-derived products such as eggs, feathers, or poultry (Orthovisc)
• Infections or skin diseases in the area of the injection site or joint
• Concomitant use of skin disinfectants containing quaternary ammonium salts

• Transient increases in inflammation in the injected joint manifested by pain and swelling have been reported following administration of hyaluronic acid in certain patients with inflammatory osteoarthritis
• Avoid concomitant use of skin disinfectants containing quaternary ammonium salts as they may cause precipitation of hyaluronic acid
• Therapy should be administered only by healthcare professionals well trained in intra-articular injection techniques
• Any joint effusion present must be removed prior to injecting hyaluronic acid
• Not indicated for use in joints other than the knees
• Effectiveness has not been established in treatment cycles less than three injections; pain relief may not be observed until after the third injection

Caution: Use cautiously in

• Hypersensitivity to avian products, feathers, and egg protein (Hyalgan)

• Advise patients to avoid any strenuous activity or extended weight-bearing activities within 48 hours following the intra-articular injection
