• Should be discontinued if diarrhea symptoms get worse or persist more than 24-48 hours and alternative antibiotic therapy should be considered
• Not effective in travelers’ diarrhea caused by Campylobacter jejuni, Shigella spp., or Salmonella spp
• Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD) ranging in severity from mild diarrhea to life-threatening colitis may occur
• Maintain appropriate fluid and electrolyte levels, protein supplementation, along with antibiotics for C. difficile and also evaluate surgical intervention as needed
• To be prescribe in proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection only or else it may increases the risk of the development of drug-resistant bacteria

• Severe hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh C)

Supplemental Patient Information

• Patients should discontinue the drug if diarrhea persists more than 24-48 hours and should seek medical advice if there is fever and/or blood in the stool

Breastfeeding: Safety Unknown; because of the potential for possible serious adverse reactions in nursing infants manufacturer recommends discontinuation of breastfeeding, or discontinuation of drug (taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother).

• CNS: Headache, dizziness, depression, insomnia
• MUSC: Muscle spasms, arthralgia, back pain

• HEMA: Anemia
• EENT: Nasopharyngitis
• HYPERSENSITIVITY: Exfoliating dermatitis, pruritus, rash, angioneurotic edema, urticaria, anaphylaxis
• MISC: Pyrexia, peripheral edema, fatigue, superinfection

• Non-aminoglycoside antibacterial; inhibits bacterial RNA synthesis by binding to the beta-subunit of bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase
• Not metabolized significantly; CYP450: unknown; minimal/no systemic absorption
• Renally excreted: 0.32%; feces: 97% (primarily unchanged)
• Half-life: 6 hrs
