- Serious anaphylactoid reactions, including death has been reported in patients with asthma receiving acetylcysteine intravenously, use cautiously in patients with asthma or history of bronchospasm
- Intravenous acetylcysteine can cause acute flushing and erythema of the skin within 30-60 mins of infusion, but it resolves spontaneously despite continued infusion of acetylcysteine
- Serious anaphylactoid reaction have been observer with acetylcysteine infusion, provide appropriate treatment like antihistamine and epinephrine in serious cases, and interrupt the infusion until treatment of the anaphylactoid symptoms has been initiated and then carefully restart it, if anaphylactoid reaction returns upon reinitiation of treatment or increases in severity, discontinue the infusion and consider the alternative management
- To avoid fluid overload, adjust the volume of dilutent for patients less than 40 kg and for those requiring fluid restriction and reduced it as needed. The fluid overload can occur if volume is not adjusted resulting in hyponatremia, seizure and death
