Adult Dosing
SPECT imaging to assist in the evaluation suspected Parkinsonian syndromes
- 111-185 MBq (3-5 mCi) IV over at least 15 to 20 seconds
- Administer 3-6 hrs before SPECT imaging
Notes:- Administer potassium Iodide oral solution or Lugol's solution (equivalent to 100 mg iodide) or potassium perchlorate (400 mg) 1 hr before administering ioflupane I-123 to block uptake of iodine 123 by the patient's thyroid
- Encourage hydration prior to and following administration
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients have not been established
[Outline]
- Hypersensitivity reactions manifested as skin erythema and pruritis have been reported following ioflupane I-123 administration. Monitor the patient for the sign and symptoms of hypersensitivity reaction and administer corticosteroids and anti-histamines if necessary
- Ioflupane I-123 should be handled with safety measures to minimize radiation exposure to clinical personnel and patients, and should be used by or under the control of physicians who are qualified by specific training and experienced in the safe use and handling of radionuclides
- Ioflupane I-123 contains up to 6% of free iodide. Block the thyroid gland before administration of ioflupane I-123, to decrease thyroid accumulation of iodine 123, as failure to block thyroid uptake of iodine 123 may result in an increased long term risk for thyroid neoplasia
- Avoid use of Potassium Iodide Oral Solution or Lugol's Solution in patients who are sensitive to such products
- Patients with severe renal impairment may have increased radiation exposure and altered ioflupane I-123 images
Caution: Use cautiously in
- History/risk of hypersensitivity reaction
Pregnancy Category:C
Breastfeeding: Excretion of ioflupane I-123 in human milk is not known, however iodine 123 is excreted into human milk. As many drugs are excreted into human milk and because of the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants, a decision should be made whether to interrupt nursing after administration of ioflupane I-123 or not to administer ioflupane I-123, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.
