Adult Dosing
2nd/3rd degree burns
- Apply 1% cream qd-bid (1.5 mm thick) on cleansed debrided areas
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and effectiveness in children have not been established
2nd/3rd degree burns (Not FDA approved)
- Apply 1% cream qd-bid; cover with light dressings

- Therapy can cause adverse reaction associated with sulfonamides including blood dyscrasias (agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, and hemolytic anemia), dermatologic and allergic reactions including Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) and exfoliative dermatitis, gastrointestinal reactions, hepatitis and hepatocellular necrosis, CNS reactions, and toxic nephrosis. Continuation of therapy must be weighed against the potential hazards of the particular allergic reaction
- Monitor serum sulfa levels and renal function in patients with extensive burns
- Therapeutic drug levels are 8-12 mg/dL; toxic levels > 12 mg/dL
- Leukopenia (primarily decreased neutrophil count) has been reported
- Monitor renal function and perform urine analysis (check for sulfa crystals)

- Hepatic impairment
- Renal impairment
- Lactation
- Pediatric population
- G6PD deficiency
Pregnancy Category:B
- Should not be used on pregnant women approaching or at term, on premature infants, or on newborn infants during the first 2 months of life
- Avoid use in third trimester of pregnancy due to risk of neonatal hemolysis and methemoglobinemia
Breastfeeding: Safety unknown; however sulfonamides are known to be excreted in breastmilk. Because of the potential for possible serious adverse reactions in nursing infants, manufacturer recommends discontinuation of breastfeeding, or postponing of treatment (taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother).
