Pregnancy Category:C
Breastfeeding: Topical adapalene has not been studied during breastfeeding. Due to minimal systemic absorption following topical application and serum levels <0.25 mcg/L with long-term use, it is considered a low risk to the nursing infant. Application to the nipple area is not recommended. Care should be taken to ensure that the infant's skin does not come into direct contact with the areas of skin that have been treated. Apply only water-miscible cream or gel products to the breast as ointments may expose the infant to high levels of mineral paraffins via licking. Benzoyl peroxide: Not studied during breastfeeding. It is considered a low risk to the nursing infant since only about 5% is absorbed following topical application. Ensure that the infant's skin does not come into direct contact with the areas of skin that have been treated. Apply only water-miscible cream or gel products to the breast as ointments may expose the infant to high levels of mineral paraffins via licking. This information is based upon LactMed database (available at http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/htmlgen?LACT last accessed 21 2011). Manufacturer advises caution.
