- Optimal pH range of collagenase is 6-8, enzyme's activities decreases with higher or lower pH conditions hence take appropriate precautions in these conditions
- Certain detergents and heavy metal ions, such as mercury and silver which are used in some antiseptics, adversely affect the enzymatic activity, hence when use of such material is suspected, clean the site carefully by repeated washings with normal saline before applying collagenase ointment
- Avoid the use of soak containing metal ions or acidic solutions because of the metal ion and low pH
- Apply the ointment carefully within the area of wound as transient erythema has been reported in the surrounding tissue especially when collagenase application is not confined to the wound
- Closely monitor debilitated patient for systemic bacterial infections, as there is theoretical possibility that debriding enzymes can increase the risk of bacteremia
