- Do not exceed recommended dose
- Avoid concomitant use of other products containing nasal decongestant or stimulant
- Discontinue therapy and consult a clinician if nervousness, dizziness or sleeplessness occurs; symptoms do not improve within 1 week or occur with a fever; cough gets worse or persists for more than 7 days or if cough comes back or occurs with fever, rash or persistent headache. Further evaluate the patients as these could be signs of a serious condition
- Use only enclosed dosing cup provided with this product; avoid using any other dosing device
- Drink plenty fluids to help loosen the congestion and lubricate throat during therapy
- Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, promptly seek medical attention or contact a Poison Control Center
Cautions: Use cautiously in
- Arrhythmias
- Hypertension
- Diabetes mellitus
- Cardiac disease
- Hyperthyroidism
- Prostatic hypertrophy
- Cough with excessive phlegm
- Persistent or chronic cough such as occurs with asthma, smoking, or emphysema
- PKU (phenylalanine-containing forms)
Supplemental Patient Information
- Advise patients to consult their physician if cough persists for >1 wk, tends to recur, or is accompanied by high fever, rash, or persistent headache
Pregnancy Category:C (dextromethorphan), C (guaifenesin), C (phenylephrine)
Breastfeeding: No studies have been conducted on excretion of dextromethorphan and guaifenesin in milk or their effect on breastfed infants. However, these medications can be given to infants as young as 1-2 months of age. It is unlikely that with usual maternal doses amounts in milk are as large as those given directly to infants or that breastfed infants would be harmed by the drug in breastmilk, especially in infants over 1-2 months of age. Avoid the use of these products with high alcohol content while nursing. Phenylephrine is unlikely to reach the infant in large amounts, as the oral bioavailability of phenylephrine is only about 40%. However, oral administration of phenylephrine decreases milk production. As no information is available on the use of oral phenylephrine during breastfeeding, an alternate drug may be preferred, especially while nursing a newborn or preterm infant.
