Pneumococcal 13-valent conjugate vaccine schedule for children previously vaccinated with pneumococcal 7-valent conjugate vaccine
- Children previously vaccinated with >1 doses of pneumococcal 7-valent conjugate vaccine may complete the immunization series with pneumococcal 13-valent conjugate vaccine
- Children 15 months through 5 yrs of age who are completely immunized with pneumococcal 7-valent conjugate vaccine may receive 1 dose of pneumococcal 13-valent conjugate vaccine to elicit immune responses to the 6 additional serotypes. This supplemental dose of pneumococcal 13-valent conjugate vaccine should be given with an interval of at least 8 wks after the final dose of pneumococcal 7-valent conjugate vaccine
Vaccination schedule for children 6 - 17 yrs of Age
- Administer 0.5 mL dose IM x1 and if pneumococcal 7-valent conjugate vaccine has been administered previously then pneumococcal 13-valent conjugate vaccine should be given with an interval of at least 8 wks
Notes:- Inject IM into the anterolateral aspect of the thigh in infants and the deltoid muscle of the upper arm in toddlers and young children

See Supplemental Patient Information
- Review of vaccination history of patients for vaccine-related hypersensitivity or adverse events is recommended prior to administration. Keep epinephrine and other necessary medications readily available for management of possible acute anaphylactic reactions
- Vaccine will not protect against S. pneumoniae disease other than those caused by the 13 serotypes included in the vaccine
- Duration of immunization is unknown
- Immunocompromised individuals such as children with congenital or acquired splenic dysfunction, HIV infection, malignancy, nephrotic syndrome, and those with hematopoietic stem cell transplant may have decreased antibody response to active immunization due to impaired immune responsiveness
- Apnea following this vaccination has been reported in certain premature infants
Cautions: Use cautiously in
- Immunocompromised individuals
- Concurrent immunosuppressants
- Premature infants
Supplemental Patient Information
- Inform parents and guardians of the importance of completing the immunization series for their children
Pregnancy Category:C
Breastfeeding: As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and several health professional organizations, the vaccines administered to a nursing mother do not affect the safety of breastfeeding for mothers or infants and breastfeeding is not a contraindication to pneumococcal vaccine. Breastfed infants should be vaccinated according to the routine recommended schedules.
