Adult Dosing
Treatment of seasonal Influenza A/B infection
- 10 mg (2 blisters) INH q12 hrs x 5 days; on first day, give two 10 mg doses at least 2 hrs apart
Prophylaxis of seasonal Influenza A/B infection
Household setting
- Start within 36 hrs of symptom onset. Dose: 10 mg (2 blisters) INH q24 hrs for 10 days
Community outbreak
- Start within 5 days of identified outbreak. Dose: 10 mg (2 blisters) INH q24 hrs for 28 days
Pediatric Dosing

- Child >7 yrs: 10 mg (2 blisters) INH q12 hrs x 5 days; on first day give two 10 mg doses at least 2 hrs apart

- It should not be considered as a substitute for early influenza vaccination on an annual basis as recommended by the CDC
- Do not administer live attenuated influenza vaccine until 48 hours following cessation of zanamivir
- Do not administer zanamivir until 2 weeks following administration of live attenuated influenza vaccine, unless medically indicated
- Allergic reactions, including oropharyngeal edema, serious skin rashes, and anaphylaxis have been reported in postmarketing experience
- Delirium and abnormal behavior leading to injury have been reported in patients receiving neuraminidase inhibitors
- Aspirin or aspirin-containing products should not be administered to any confirmed or suspected case of novel influenza H1N1 virus infection aged 18 years old and younger due to the risk of Reye syndrome

- Chronic illness
- Elderly patients
- Pregnancy
- Lactation
- Pediatric patients <7 yrs (for treatment) or <5 yrs (for prophylaxis) [safety not established]

Breastfeeding: Safety unknown. Zanamivir is excreted in breastmilk of lactating rats. Manufacturer advises caution.
