Absorption Inhibitors:
- Aluminum Antacids
- Cholestyramine (Questran, etc.)
- Colesevelam (WelChol)
- Colestipol (Colestid)
Comment:
Theoretically, the absorption of deferasirox may be reduced by agents containing aluminum. Cholestyramine moderately reduces deferasirox absorption, and other bile acid sequestrants probably have a similar effect.
Class 3: Assess Risk & Take Action if Necessary
- Circumvent/Minimize: If combined therapy is necessary, give the deferasirox at least 2 to 4 hours before or 6 hours after the absorption inhibitor to minimize the interaction.
- Monitor: Watch for reduced deferasirox efficacy in patients taking absorption inhibitors.
