- Measles vaccine should be used cautiously in any condition in which stress due to fever should be avoided such as history of cerebral injury, individual or family histories of convulsions. Physician should be alert to the temperature elevation which may occur following vaccination
- Measles vaccine contains albumin, a derivative of human blood and may carry a risk of transmission of viral diseases. However because of effective donor screening and product manufacturing processes this risk is extremely remote
- Live measles vaccine is produced in chick embryo cell culture, hence can cause anaphylactic, anaphylactoid or other immediate reactions in a person hypersensitive to egg. Use with extreme caution in these patients with adequate emergency treatment on hand
- Do not administer to the person who has experienced anaphylactic reactions to topically or systemically administered neomycin. However history of contact dermatitis to neomycin is not a contraindication to receiving measles
- Adequate emergency treatment, including epinephrine injection (1:1000), should be available for immediate use in case anaphylactic or anaphylactoid reaction occurs
- Take special care that injection does not enter a blood vessel
- The expected immune response will not be obtained if vaccine is administered to immunocompromised persons
- Delay the vaccination for 3 months or longer following blood or plasma transfusions, or administration of immune globulin (human)
- Attenuated measles virus vaccine live may result in a temporary depression of tuberculin skin sensitivity. Hence perform tuberculin test either before or simultaneously with measles virus vaccine
- Live measles vaccination in children under treatment for tuberculosis, does not exacerbate the disease. However, individuals with active untreated tuberculosis should not be vaccinated
Cautions: Use cautiously in
- History of cerebral injury
- Individual or family histories of convulsions
- Hypersensitivity to egg protein
- Thrombocytopenia
Pregnancy Category:C
Breastfeeding: It is unknown whether measles vaccine virus is secreted in human milk. As many drugs are excreted in human milk manufacturer advises caution
