[Outline]
- An increase in all-cause mortality has been observed with the use of therapy. This increase in all-cause mortality should be considered when selecting among treatment options
- Life-threatening anaphylaxis/anaphylactoid reactions have been reported with tigecycline. Exercise caution in patients with known hypersensitivity to tetracyclines
- Hepatic dysfunction and liver failure have also been reported
- When therapy administered in patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia, lower cure rates and higher mortality were seen
- Fatal pancreatitis may occur during therapy; suspend therapy if pancreatitis suspected
- It may cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman. The use of tigecycline during tooth development (last half of pregnancy, infancy, and children younger than 8 yr of age) may cause permanent discoloration of the teeth
- Pseudomembranous colitis may occur. Consider possibility in patients who develop diarrhea
- Superinfection may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms. Monitor patient for superinfection. Monitor PT/INR if used with warfarin
- Use with caution when considering tigecycline monotherapy in patients with complicated intra-abdominal infections secondary to intestinal perforation
- Tigecycline is structurally similar to tetracycline class antibiotics and may have similar adverse effects (eg, pancreatitis, photosensitivity, pseudotumor cerebri)
Cautions: Use cautiously in
- Hepatic impairment
- Intestinal perforation
- Geriatric patients
Pregnancy Category:D
