Adult Dosing

Severe fungal infections

• 50-150 mg/kg/day PO in divided doses q6 hrs
• Note: To minimize GI upset, give a few capsules at a time over 15 minutes

Pediatric Dosing

• Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients have not been established

• In combination with amphotericin B; treatment of serious infections caused by susceptible strains of Candida and/or Cryptococcus
• Candida infections in septicemia, endocarditis, UTIs and pulmonary infections
• Cryptococcus infections in meningitis, pulmonary, septicemia, and UTIs

• Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of the product

• Use with extreme caution in renal impairment; closely monitor hematologic, renal, and hepatic status of all patients
• Review instructions thoroughly before administration

Breastfeeding: No reports describing the use of flucytosine during lactation or measuring the amount, if any, excreted in human milk have been located. Manufacturer advices, use taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother, weighing potential benefits as compared to risks.

• GU: Azotemia, creatinine and BUN elevation, crystalluria, renal failure
• HEMA: Anemia, agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia, eosinophilia, leukopenia, pancytopenia, thrombocytopenia
• CNS: Ataxia, hearing loss, headache, paresthesia, parkinsonism, peripheral neuropathy, vertigo, sedation, convulsions, fatigue
• METABOLIC: Hypoglycemia, hypokalemia
• PSYCHIATRIC: Confusion, hallucinations, psychosis
• MISC: Pyrexia, weakness, allergic reactions, lyell’s syndrome, azotemia

• Antifungal; exact mechanism of action unknown; thought to interfere with protein synthesis in cells of susceptible fungi after conversion to fluorouracil
