Adult Dosing
Acne vulgaris (lotion)
- Apply a thin film to affected areas bid
Secondary bacterial skin infections (Carmol lotion, foam, wash)
- Foam: Gently massage into affected areas until foam disappears; repeat application for 8-10 days
- Carmol lotion: Apply to affected areas bid-qid until the infection has cleared
- Wash: Gently wash affected areas, massage into skin until a lather forms, rinse thoroughly, and pat dry; rinse with plain water. Repeat application for 8-10 days
Seborrheic dermatitis (Carmol lotion, foam, wash)
Foam
- Gently massage into affected areas of the scalp until foam disappears; apply bid x 8-10 days
Notes:- Allow the treated area to air dry; do not wash the treated area immediately after foam application
- The interval between applications may be lengthened as the condition subsides; apply once or twice weekly or every other week to prevent recurrence
- Consider retreatment if the condition reoccurs after stopping therapy
Carmol lotion
- Apply at bedtime and allow to remain overnight. In severe cases with crusting, heavy scaling, and inflammation, apply lotion twice daily
Notes:- Precede application with a shampoo if the hair or scalp is oily or greasy or if there is significant debris
- The interval between applications may be lengthened as the condition subsides; apply once or twice weekly or every other week to prevent recurrence
- Consider retreatment if the condition reoccurs after stopping therapy
Wash

- Incidence of fatal reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, fulminant hepatic necrosis, agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia, and other blood dyscrasias have been reported rarely; hypersensitivity reactions may occur on re-administration of the drug, irrespective of the route of administration
- Discontinue use at the appearance of first sign of hypersensitivity, such as a skin rash or other reactions
- Product contains sodium metabisulfite, which may cause anaphylactic symptoms and life-threatening or less severe asthmatic episodes in susceptible individuals. Sulfite sensitivity occurs more frequently in asthmatics when compared to non-asthmatic people
- Drug-induced systemic lupus erythematosus following topical application have been reported
- Recommended for external use only, discontinue therapy if irritation occurs and institute appropriate therapy
- Monitor patients for local irritation or sensitization during long-term treatment
- Sulfacetamide use may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi
- Para-aminobenzoic acid present in purulent exudates may reduce the efficacy of sulfonamides
- Therapy may cause reddening and scaling of skin
Cautions: use cautiously in
- Asthma patients
- Denuded, abraded, infected, large or severely burned areas of skin
Pregnancy Category:C
Breastfeeding: Safety unknown. As per manufacturer's data, it unknown whether this drug is excreted in human milk on topical use. Systemic administration may cause kernicterus in the infants of lactating women; caution should be exercised during nursing.
