Adult Dosing

Hypotension

• 25-50 mg SC. Give 25-50 mg IM/IV if rapid effect is needed; may give 10-25 by IV push
• May give additional doses at 5-10 mins intervals. Max: 150 mg/24 hrs

Bronchospasm

• 12.5 to 25 mg SC/IM/IV according to patient response

Pediatric Dosing

Hypotension

• 0.5 mg/kg IM/SC of body weight or 16.7 mg/square m² IM/SC q4-6 hours

• Carefully administer therapy in patients with heart disease, angina pectoris, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, prostatic hypertrophy or hypertension and to patients receiving digitalis
• Chronic use of therapy may produce a syndrome resembling an anxiety state
• Tolerance to ephedrine may develop, but temporary discontinuance to the drug restores its original effectiveness

Breastfeeding: Ephedrine is excreted in breast milk. Due to the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants, manufacturer recommends discontinuation of nursing or discontinuation of drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.

• CNS: Stroke, seizures, insomnia, headache, dizziness, CNS stimulation, anxiety, tremor, nervousness, vertigo
• GI: Nausea, vomiting, anorexia
• HEPA: Hepatotoxicity
• GU: Nephrotoxicity, urinary retention, painful urination
• DERM: Sweating

• Vasopressor; it has sympathomimetic action. It stimulates alpha adrenergic receptors and causes relaxation of smooth muscle
